2008 SC Report Card on Public Education. Measuring Up is a series of biennial report cards that provide the general public and policymakers with information to assess and improve higher education in
each state. The report cards evaluate states because they are primarily responsible for educational access and quality in the United States. This year’s edition, Measuring Up 2008, is the fifth in the series, which began in 2000. In Measuring Up, “higher education” refers to all education and training beyond high school, including public and private, two- and four-year, and for-profit and nonprofit institutions.

SC Report South Carolina Higher Education Report. In 2007, the General Assembly created a Higher Education Study Committee to work with the S.C. Commission on Higher Education to make recommendations for a statewide higher education strategic plan. The committee has developed a plan centered on four goals including making South Carolina one of the most educated states, increasing research and innovation, making South Carolina a leader in workforce training and educational services and realizing South Carolina’s potential: resources and effectiveness. AdvancEd Accreditation. The school district just received preliminary approval for accreditation through AdvanEd. See the findings of the site visit.

HeadStrong. We are working on a campaign to inspire teenagers in Greenville to value learning. AS part of this campaign, a group of Greenville high school students are developing the viral marketing campaign.

Graduate Greenville "Opening Doors to Success Day." In August 2008, Greenville Forward helped recruit over 140 volunteers who went door to door at the home of students who had not returned back to school at Berea or Greenville High School. As a result of the effort, 18 students returned to school. Read more.

The Amazing Read. Sponsored by the Greenville County Library and Greenville Forward, the Amazing Read was held at the beginning of 2008 and included free book giveaways at each branch of the Greenville County Library System, author appearances, an Alzheimer's Disease panel discussion, and organized book discussion groups throughout the county. Some measureable outcomes of the program include:

  • 505 copies of The Pleasure Was Mine were given away to the public in January.
  • GCLS circulated 56 copies of The Pleasure Was Mine between January and March.
  • The Pleasure Was Mine was checked out 311 times from GCLS during the Amazing Read.
  • A total of 563 people participated in the scheduled Amazing Read events.

Dr. Judith Prince has published several op-eds in the Greenville News.

Riley Institute Hewlett Study Results (Link to page)

Furman released a two year study of the state of education in South Carolina schools. Much of the conversation revolves about the consistency of findings between groups.
